An Election Series, Plate II

Canvassing for Votes

In the Boydell edition (c. 1800) the paper is heavier and has a textured surface.
The scan doesn't really capture it, but the dark areas are black rather than grey.

In the 1822 Baldwin & Craddock edition the paper has a lighter weight with a smooth surface
and an ivory color. It has an overall grey tone.

In the c. 1800 edition, the sky in the upper left shows billowing clouds.

In the 1822 edition, the clouds have almost become a solid grey field.

This detail shows the linework of the clouds in the c. 1800 edition.

In the 1822 edition, it's been replaced by cross-hatching.

In the lower right, the c. 1800 edition, there are vines and leaves behind the cluster of grapes.

In the 1822 edition, the leaves have lost their definition. Some of the detail on the top of the doorframe is also lost.

In the upper right, the young women on the balcony in the c. 1800 edition are rendered with a fine stipple and cross-hatching.

In the 1822 edition, the face of the woman on the left has additional lines and the shading on the ribbons of her hat have changed from cross-hatch to diagonal lines.

In the c. 1800 edition, the three central figures have intricate linework in their faces, hair and hands that create the effect of subtle lighting.

In the 1822 edition, most of the linework has worn away, creating the impression that the figures are harshly lit.
