Subscribers' Editions

For the first editions of his major series, Hogarth sold to subscribers who paid half of the fee before the prints were published. This income supported the costs of engraving and printing. After publication, the subscribers paid the balance. In 1732 Hogarth had 1,240 subscribers for the first edition of A Harlot's Progress.
